Commentaire:
Bringing sunshine, rest and relaxation to the bustling heart of Times Square, Jimmy Buffett's musical Escape to Margaritaville describes itself as not just a musical, but a way of life.

Directed and choreographed respectively by Christopher Ashley and Kelly Devine - the duo that brought you the smash hit musical Come From Away - Escape to Margaritaville features a parrothead's dream playlist of Jimmy Buffett classics such as "Fins," "Why Don't We Get Drunk," "Son of a Son of a Sailor," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and, of course, "Margaritaville." It also features a scenic design by Walt Spangler that is as luxuriously tropical as it is functional. Indeed, the Marquis Theatre has been transformed into a paradise island getaway, complete with cabanas, margarita machines and bouncing beach balls, that feels like a summer vacation no matter what time of year you decide to visit.

Buffett's hits have been woven unashamedly into a book by Greg Garcia and Mike O'Malley that follows the pursuits of Tully and Rachel, two individuals mismatched by attitudes and ideologies, whose shared attraction is destined to overcome life's many obstacles. He is a singer/bartender at the Hotel Margaritaville, enjoying the easy life and staying clear of the fast lane (and relationship commitments). She is an environmental scientist, who can't survive without a wi-fi connection, and strives to save the world. Escape to Margaritaville explores how two characters from two different worlds can evolve and find comprimises on a search for true happiness - a search they both didn't necessarily realise they were undertaking.

Aside from our two protagonists, there is a wealth of comic relief spilling from the stage in the form of two subplot love stories, as Tammy, an underappreciated and body-shamed bride-to-be, meets Brick, an unassuming and simple guy, who loves her just the way she is, and as Marley, manager of the Hotel Margaritaville, finally gives in to the advances of the often drunken, seaplane pilot J.D. (albeit whilst she fantasizes he is actually Denzel Washington).

If you are in the mood for some piña colada-infused light-hearted entertainment, where sing-alongs are actively encouraged, then book an escape to Maragaritaville today...

Cheeseburger in Paradise, anyone???  (plus)

Presse: "If you’re not drunk or a Parrothead, as Mr. Buffett's fans are called, you’re in trouble." Jesse Green for New York Times

"Of course Jimmy Buffett’s new Broadway jukebox musical “Escape to Margaritaville” comes with a lost shaker of salt. But what’s with the sparkly zombie kickline, fat-shaming fiancé and so-called super potato that can power appliances? Somebody’s had too many margaritas. But so it goes in this musical that may fit the bill if you’re in the mood for a breezy but dopey diversion. A few pre-theater margaritas may enhance things." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Along with more than two dozen songs from Buffett’s tropical-burnout catalog, the show offers steel drums, jean shorts, palm trees and dancers dressed as fluffy white clouds. It’s often hokey and sometimes pokey. But I’ll level with you: I had fun." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"Here's a quick test to determine if you're the target audience for the new musical based on the songs of Jimmy Buffett. If you're immediately able to add the words "and screw" to the song title "Why Don't We Get Drunk" then it's a pretty safe bet you'll enjoy Escape to Margaritaville." Frank Scheck for Hollywood Reporter

"Parrotheads, be warned that there aren’t enough parrots in this show. (Can somebody do something about that?) Otherwise, the hedonistic spirit of Buffett’s feel-good “gulf and western” music is on flamboyant display in this witless but colorful songbook musical custom-tailored for the fans." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaire: The show begins previews on October 5th, following a month long tryout in Chicago. In the director's chair is two time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, La Cage Aux Folles), while the choreography will come courtesy of Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys). The cast is yet to be announced.

Never mind Jay-Z and Beyonce, the Estefans were the original superstar music couple. She is one of the biggest selling singers of all time, while he's the mastermind producer behind dozens of massive names. What's better still is the story of their rise to fame, a true rags to riches tale, which is as close to the American dream as you can get. On Your Feet! is a new Jukebox musical which charts their careers and relationship, all soundtracked by Estefan's genre-defining greatest hits, including 'Rhythm is Gonna Get You' and 'Words Get in the Way', as well as some all-new tracks.  (plus)

Presse: "The recipe may be familiar, but the flavor is fresh in 'On Your Feet!,' the half-formulaic, half-original and undeniably crowd-pleasing musical about the lives of Emilio and Gloria Estefan." Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"A paint-by-numbers portrait can still be colorful — and a kick. Case in point: 'On Your Feet!,' a predictable but entertaining show about Gloria Estefan and her music-producer husband Emilio." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"A serviceable jukebox musical." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"'On Your Feet!'... is a fine addition to the ranks of jukebox musicals." Mark Kennedy for Associated Press

"Already proving a solid crowdpleaser in previews, the show features a star-making lead performance from radiant newcomer Ana Villafane." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"Newcomer Ana Villafane (who originated the role in the show’s Chicago premiere) is a knockout in the leading role, the dazzling centerpiece of this flashy, splashy spectacle helmed by Jerry Mitchell." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaire: When the original principals\' contracts were up, the producers chose to close the show rather than replace them. Before deciding to close, they had hoped for a starry set of replacements. Antonio Banderas, Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Ramin Karimloo and Raul Esparza were all being considered to play Che, though they were not able to reach any deals. Additionally, Lea Michele and Sierra Boggess were possibilities for the role of Eva (although the producers declined to comment on whether or not either actress was approached).
The production failed to recoup its investment. It would have had to play 63 weeks to return the initial investment. It only played 46 weeks. Budgeted at $9M.  (plus)

Commentaire: The Broadway production - a slightly shortened version - opened in November 2005, generally to negative reviews, with the feeling it was not a terrible show, just very unexciting. During the run Maria Friedman was taken ill and missed a number of performances while she underwent treatment for breast cancer. In a surprise decision, the Broadway show closed in February - a week before the London version. It had given just 109 regular performances and 20 previews. The producers cited Maria Friedman's frequent absences (as well as the negative reviews) as difficult obstacles to overcome.  (plus)

Presse: Initial mainstream press reviews of The Capeman were overwhelmingly negative, though most had some praise for Simon's music.

Ben Brantley, reviewer for the New York Times, gave a very negative review, calling the show a "sad, benumbed spectacle" which was "unparalleled in its wholesale squandering of illustrious talents". He praised Simon's Songs From The Capeman album, but said that the translation to stage was lacking: "Everything in the music melts together; practically nothing that's said, done and shown on the stage seems to connect with anything else." Brantley admired Anthony and Blades' talents, but criticized the writing of their character, saying that Anthony "has been given no proper role to play". He wrote that the historical footage of Agron stole the show, especially young Sal's media statements that his mother could watch him burn. "Nothing that Mr. Anthony or Mr. Blades does in The Capeman begins to approach the disturbing complexity of that image."[3] However The Capeman was included in the New York Times year end Top Ten list for music in Theater.

There was a minority that appreciated the play, but these were generally outside the mainstream. An article in The Progressive suggests cultural factors that led to the bad reviews, citing mainstream backlash against Simon's disparagement of the Broadway system, and discomfort with racial and ethnic themes in the Broadway core audience. The article points out that reviews were generally positive among two groups: out of town critics, and non-white New York critics.

Presse: In his review in Time, William A. Henry III called the production "a crashing bore - cranky and arbitrary as a love story, tedious and pointless as a murder mystery, ham-handed as comedy, clubfooted as dance, at best wanly pleasant as music." He added, "A few scenes work, some quite well. The final 10 minutes achieve a truth and simplicity underscoring the barren brittleness of what has gone before. But ultimately the show fails at its most basic task: making audiences care about, or for that matter simply believe in, the characters."

Frank Rich in his review in the New York Times wrote:"...this musical will no doubt always be remembered, and not without fondness, for its troubled preview period, its much-postponed opening, its hassles with snooping journalists and its conflict with the city's Consumer Affairs Commissioner. Indeed, the story of 'Nick and Nora' in previews, should it ever be fully known, might in itself make for a riotous, 1930's-style screwball-comedy musical. But the plodding show that has emerged from all this tumult is, a few bright spots notwithstanding, an almost instantly forgettable mediocrity."

Because of its mediocre reception, the musical is often referred to as "Nick & Snore-a".
